Department of Islamic Studies was establish in 2014. At present the department offers two programs these are B A (Hon’s) in Islamic Studies & M A in Islamic Studies (Major in Islamic Economics and Banking)
Programs Offered
B.A. (Hons.) in Islamic studies:
Objective:
The increasing demand of Islamic knowledge for financial and economical activities, tempting new and suitable academic courses. The objective of the courses BA (Honors) Islamic Studies (Major in Islamic Economics and Banking) is to provide students a complete knowledge of Islamic Economics and Banking as well as code of life based on the revealed knowledge. The curriculum is designed to enable students to have a comprehensive world view on Islam as an ideal system and its role in the development of human life and resolve current issues using Islamic tradition according to teaching and practical guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Program Content:
The B.A. (Honours) program shall extend over 04 years of study. It shall consist of 42 courses of 140 Credit hours. The B.A. (Honours) program consists of (i) Core Courses, (ii) General Education Courses (GED), (iii) Major Courses. The core courses are designed to build modern and effective knowledge in the subject. The general education courses are introduced to enhance the students’ basic knowledge in humanities and science. The major courses are to introduce the students in the perspective of basic needs and knowledge in the field of Islam.
Semesters at the University:
There will be two semesters in an academic year as follows:
Spring : January-June
Fall : July-December
Admission Requirements:
A Higher Secondary Certificate (H.S.C) in Humanities, Business/Commerce, Science, Alim or its equivalent of 12 (twelve) years of Schooling with good(GPA-2.5) academic results. For the foreign Schooling, equivalence will be determined by the university authority.
B.A. (Hons) Degree requirements:
The B.A. (Hons) Degree requirements are as follows:
- Completion of 42 courses (140 credit hours),
- Passing of a course individually and maintaining a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00.
Evaluation Strategy:
Marks will be distributed for class attendance, assignment, tutorial examination, quiz/MCQ test, case studies, mid-term and final examination, viva-voice or the methods determined by the Department. All the earned marks during the program will be converted into the letter grades for the courses studied and the final result will be the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for the Program.
Course Description
The course offered for B.A (Hons.) students are as follows: (1) Core Course, (2) General Education course, (3) Major course and (4) Internship-Compulsory for all.
Break-up of the courses:
Total credits : 140 credits hours
Core Courses : Credits (25 x 03) = 75
General Education courses : Credits (06 x 03) = 18
Major courses : Credits (10 x 03) = 30
Internship : Credits (01 x 03) = 03
Workload
The minimum number of credit hours that a student may take per semester is 9 and the maximum is 12. This may be relaxed only with special permission of the appropriate authority at LU.
M.A. (Preliminary & Final) in Islamic studies:
Objective:

The objective of the course MA Islamic Studies (Major in Islamic Economics and Banking) is to provide students a complete knowledge of Islamic Economics and Banking as well as code of life based on the revealed knowledge. The curriculum is designed to enable students to have a comprehensive world view on Islam as an ideal system and its role in the development of human life and resolve current issues using Islamic tradition according to teaching and practical guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
Enrollment Requirements:
The enrollment requirement for admission into M.A. in Islamic Studies program is a B.A. pass degree/B.A. Hons. or any other equivalent level of education. In addition GPA-2.5 is required in both SSC and HSC examination. Admission into M.A in Islamic Studies program on a competitive basis. Candidates are selected for admission on the basis of past academic records, written tests or a viva voice examination. For the foreign Degrees, equivalence will be determined by the university authority.
Graduation Requirements:
A student with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies will have to complete 36 credit hours (12 courses) from MA Final Part to graduate; a student with a 3-year Bachelor’s Hon’s degree in Islamic Studies will have to complete 48 credit hours (16 courses;i.e.4 courses from MA Preliminary part and 12 courses from MA Final Part). A student without Islamic Studies as a subject of combination at the Bachelor’s level (pass course) will have to take another 24 credit hours (8 courses) to compensate, In such case the student will have to complete 60 credit hours (20 courses; i.e.8 courses from MA Preliminary part and 12 courses from MA Final Part). Besides, the student who have passed MA preliminary examination in Islamic Studies from National University, Bangladesh or any other University will have to complete 48 credit hours (16 courses; i.e.4 courses from MA Preliminary part and 12 courses from MA Final Part). If a student has Masters in Islamic Studies he/she may apply for waivers for 4 courses of 1st semester to apply for waiver/s for the students of National University must have 60% marks and other University students must have 70% marks in their previous Masters.
