Overview of the Department of Architecture, Leading University

The Department of Architecture at Leading University (LU), Sylhet, commenced its journey on February 3, 2007, as the first and only private university in Sylhet offering a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) program. LU achieved a significant milestone in April 2022 by earning accreditation from the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), becoming the only private university outside Dhaka to receive this recognition.

The department’s five-year B.Arch program spans ten semesters and requires minimum 194 credits for graduation. Designed around outcome-based (OBE) education, the curriculum focuses on architectural design, construction technology, and sustainability. It equips students to meet the evolving demands of the architectural profession, preparing them for diverse career opportunities at home and abroad, while fostering a deep appreciation for environmental, cultural, and societal factors.

The program balances theoretical knowledge and practical application through a combination of general education (GED) courses, core theoretical and studio-based courses, excursions etc. It integrates advanced technology with traditional and contextual design principles to ensure a comprehensive and well-rounded architectural education. In addition, the mandatory eight (08) weeks professional internship provides scopes to gather practical working experience with professional architects as well as to get easy access to the job market.

From modest beginnings, the department has grown into a vibrant community of approximately 200 students. It is supported by a team of highly qualified full-time faculty and experienced part-time and visiting professionals who bring real-world insights to the classroom. Faculty members are dedicated to nurturing students’ creativity and academic growth, with a particular emphasis on design—a central pillar of architectural education.

State-of-the-art facilities enhance the learning experience, including five spacious design studios equipped for innovative exploration. Regular study tours provide students with exposure to diverse cultural and contextual settings, enriching their design perspectives. The department also showcases student work through open exhibitions that consistently earn admiration, highlighting its commitment to quality and innovation.

Over the years, the Department of Architecture at LU has established a strong reputation in Bangladesh for producing skilled and imaginative professionals.
